I Began Working With People Suffering From Religious Trauma
I was raised Adventist near Loma Linda and went through ‘our schools’ up through graduation from La Sierra—which included two years in boarding school in the late 70s, during the Satan/rock n roll panic era. I had a huge crisis of faith in my senior year of college after learning more about the cosmologies of other religions and cultures.
This relativized my view of Adventism’s truth claims and I just couldn’t stay within such a parochial belief system anymore. I thought my way right out of church, and Christianity altogether, over the course of a few intensely painful weeks of existential crisis.
I eventually became a psychologist and since the Trump years, I began working with people suffering from religious trauma due to negative experiences with any high-demand religious group. I had already gone through the experience of deconstructing myself, decades before it was called that!
I would be happy to be a resource if you are ever looking for an ex-SDA psychologist to consult with. I’m also associated with Journey Free as a support group facilitator.
Best wishes and luck with this project!
